Platinum on carbon / activated charcoal is also referred to as pt/c . It is a form of platinum used as catalyst . Platinum metal is supported on activated carbon in order to maximize its surface area and activity. It is useful as a catalyst in catalytic hydrogenation in organic synthesis.

It is also used in Pyridine ring hydrogenations, aromatic ring hydrogenation, and reduction of chlorinated nitro aromatic compounds without loss of chlorine atoms. Reduction of Schiff's base. Reduction of aliphatic and aromatic nitro compounds.
